The 24-year-old son of Hall of Fame quarterback John Elway was arrested in Colorado on Saturday on suspicion of assault against a woman police described as his girlfriend.

John Albert Elway III, 24, was taken into custody about 4 a.m. by Denver police at his father’s Cherry Hills home after he allegedly argued with the woman as they drove in his car in downtown Denver.

Elway pulled over and allegedly dragged the woman from the car by her hair, said Sonny Jackson, a Denver police spokesman.

The woman attempted to stand up, but Elway forced her to the ground, police said, offering no further details of the incident. Elway fled on foot, leaving his car and his California driver’s license at the scene.

The woman was scraped and bruised, police said.

The younger Elway, also known as Jack, is a California resident; police did not identifty the city. He is the only son of the Denver Broncos executive vice president of football operations and general manager.

Jack Elway attended a Colorado high school, where he played quarterback before attending Arizona State University, where he also played football for a time.
