Locals continue to compete in Rio Olympics

The 2016 Summer Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, are in their final week as the Games end with its closing ceremony Sunday.

Below is an update on how local athletes and their respective teams have done through Tuesday in Rio.

Men’s Indoor Volleyball

Team USA, which includes outside hitter Taylor Sander, has advanced to the tournament semifinals Friday.

The U.S. won three consecutive matches in Pool A play after starting the tournament with two losses. Its comeback run continued Wednesday morning with a 3-0 quarterfinal round sweep of Poland at the Maracanazinho Arena.

Team USA’s third tournament win came Monday and also was a 3-0 sweep of Mexico (25-23, 25-11, 25-19). Sander, 24, had eight kills, three digs, an ace and led Team USA in blocks with three. He scored 12 points.

After losses to Canada (3-0) Aug. 7 and Italy (3-1) Aug. 9, Team USA bounced back and went on to defeat host and world No. 1 Brazil (3-1) Aug. 11 and France (3-1) Saturday before wins this week against Mexico and Poland.

Team USA’s semifinal round opponent wasn’t known at press time. The tournament medal games are Sunday.

Women’s Canoe/Kayaking

Maggie Hogan competed for the first time in Rio Monday in the Canoe sprint Kayak single 200 meters. She turned in a time of 44.66 seconds and finished 27th.

Hogan, 37, also was to compete Wednesday in the Canoe sprint kayak single 500 meters. Results weren’t available at press time.

Men’s Water Polo

Team USA, which includes Bret Bonanni, played its final game of the tournament Sunday and rallied for a 10-7 victory over Italy in Group B play. Bonanni scored twice.

Italy held leads of 2-0 and 4-2 in the first quarter but a goal by Bonanni with 6:13 left to play in the first half brought Team USA within 4-3. Italy held a 6-5 lead at the half and 7-6 in the third quarter, but the U.S. went ahead for the first time and took the lead for good (8-7) late in the quarter.

Team USA turned in a strong fourth quarter and held Italy scoreless. Bonanni, 22, scored the final U.S. goal of the tournament with 2:41 left in the game to give the U.S. a 10-7 advantage.

It was the ninth goal of the tournament for Bonanni, who had a game-high four goals in a loss to Spain last week.

Team USA finished 2-3 overall in Group B play. The U.S. lost consecutive matches to Croatia (7-5) and Spain (10-9) before defeating France (6-3), and lost to Montenegro (8-5) before closing out the tournament with Sunday’s win over Italy.

Men’s Swimming

Tom Shields earned a spot in the Men’s 100-meter butterfly final Friday at Olympics Aquatics Stadium. He finished in seventh among eight finalists with a time of 51.73.

Joseph Schooling, 21, of Austin, Texas and representing Singapore, captured the gold medal with a winning time of 50.39. There was a three-way tie for the silver medal between Team USA’s Michael Phelps, Chad Le Clos of South Africa, and Laszlo Cseh of Hungary. The trio each finished in 51.14.

Shields had qualified for the final by winning his 100 heat in 51.58. He beat out Le Clos, the 2015 World Championships winner in the 100 butterfly, who finished third. Shields was fourth in the 100 butterfly at the 2015 World Championships.

The 100 butterfly was the second of two events in Rio for the 25-year-old who first competed during the opening weekend of the Games Aug. 7 in the 200 butterfly. Shields finished sixth in his heat and 20th overall.

Men’s Beach Volleyball

Jake Gibb and Casey Patterson went 1-2 overall in Pool F play and were eliminated from the tournament last week. The pair won their opening match Aug. 6 by sweeping Qatar’s Jefferson Pereira and Cherif Younousse (21-16, 21-16) but then were defeated in consecutive matches by Alexander Huber and Robin Seidl of Austria (21-18, 21-18) Aug. 8, and Spain’s Adrian Gavira Collado and Pablo Herrera Allepuz (21-19, 16-21, 15-7) Aug. 10.

The other Team USA Men’s duo in the tournament, Phil Dalhauser and Nick Lucena, were eliminated in the quarterfinals Monday by Brazil’s top-seeded team of Alison Cerutti and Bruno Schmidt who scored a 21-14, 12-21, 15-9 victory. Dalhauser and Lucena finished in a tie for fifth place.
