Baseball: Mike Alonso is retiring after 33 years coaching at Upland
It’s going to be an interesting week for Upland’s baseball team. The players desperately want to make the Southern Section Division II playoffs so their retiring coach, Mike Alonso, can have one final post season.
Upland (7-6) is tied for third place in the Baseline League with Rancho Cucamonga (7-6) and the two teams play in a two-game series this week. Also still alive for the playoffs are Chino Hills (7-5) and Etiwanda (6-7). Damien (9-3) is in first place.
“It’s going to be nuts,” Alonso said of the finish.
Regardless of what happens, the 63-year-old Alonso will be retiring with no regrets. He has been head coach since 1984.
“They’ve been great kids, and I would not change a thing,” he said. “What you’re dealt with, you go with. I’ve been totally blessed.”
