Boys’ basketball: Birmingham’s Devante Doutrive is proving to be impact transfer player

When it comes to impact transfer players, it’s going to be hard to top what 6-foot-5 junior Devante Doutrive has done for Birmingham High.

The transfer from Alaska has scored 35, 31, 32 and 34 points in his four games for the Patriots.

His 34 points on Thursday night helped Birmingham defeat Mission Prep, 87-85, in overtime in the Beverly Hills tournament. Birmingham rallied from an 18-point deficit. Also making a big contribution was Adrian Byrd-Jelinek, who finished with 34 points. Mark Boland made three threes.

Windward defeated St. Bernard, 63-54.

Friday’s schedule at Beverly Hills: Mission Prep vs. Brentwood, 2 p.m.; Crosroads vs. Birmingham, 3:30 p.m.; Beverly Hills vs. Loyola, 5 p.m.; El Camino Real vs. Taft, 6:30 p.m.; Washington vs. Orange Lutheran, 8 p.m.

In the Corona del Mar tournament, Mater Dei defeated Edison, 83-44. MJ Cage scored 23 points and Justice Sueing had 15 points. Nate Matthews had 16 points for Edison.

In the Sierra Canyon tournament, Oak Park defeated Calabasas, 54-48. Riley Battin had 23 points and 13 rebounds to help Oak Park improve to 5-2. Friday’s semifinals will have Sierra Canyon facing La Canada at 6:30 p.m., followed by Oak Park-Alemany at 8 p.m.

La Canada defeated Westlake, 63-48. Ben Choi had 16 points. Granada Hills received 19 points apiece from Miles Rogers and Sean Lee in a 76-71 win over Valencia. Zach Hawkins had 22 points for Valencia.

Chaminade advanced to the championship game of the Heritage Christian tournament with a 53-50 win over Burroughs. Josh Hauser had 25 points.

University advanced to the championship game of its own tournament with a 54-27 win over Buckely. Jude Agbasi had 12 points. University will play Bernstein at 7:30 p.m. View Park defeated Los Angeles, 58-33.

Tarbut V’Torah was beaten by Estancia, 59-46, despite 20 points from Brandon Averitt.

Bishop Montgomery defeated Peninsula, 77-39.

Lawndale advanced to semifinals of El Rancho tournament with 55-40 win over Montebello. Eric Willis had 15 points and freshman Demarjae Gilmore had 11 points.
