Hart Coach Mike Herrington decided to give running back Nelson James a pep talk at halftime with his team holding a 14-10 lead over Paraclete. James listened and delivered.

“He came out and ran hard,” Herrington said.

James finished with 146 yards rushing and one touchdown and added six catches for 72 yards and one touchdown in the Indians’ 38-16 victory. His 15-yard TD run ignited the Indians in the third quarter.

Quarterback Nick Moore ran for 81 yards and was 16 of 28 passing for 205 yards. He had touchdown runs of two and 47 yards.

Moore’s ability to run ought to help the Indians (2-0) when Foothill League play begins.

Paraclete (0-3) received a 52-yard touchdown reception from Melquise Stovall and an 80-yard TD reception from Brandon Smith. Stovall had to leave the game in the fourth quarter with a leg injury.

“We did not execute,” Herrington said of the Indians’ first-half performance.

In another nonleague game, Golden Valley improved to 2-0 with a 39-20 win over Crescenta Valley, ending the Falcons’ 16-game win streak. KJ Maduike scored three touchdowns for Golden Valley.

Los Alamitos rolled to a 53-16 win over Lakewood.
