Football: Venice is in position to win a 13th consecutive league title
Veteran coach likes what he sees
Of all the teams competing for a league championship in the City Section on Friday, probably the most unlikely is Venice.
The Gondoliers lost their Western League opener to University, 14-7, ending a 43-game league winning streak, stood at 1-5 on the year and seemed headed to oblivion.
“It was gloom and doom,” Coach Angelo Gasca said.
But look who’s one win away from winning its 13th consecutive league title _ Venice. All the Gondoliers (4-5, 3-1) need to do is knock off Hamilton (6-3, 4-0) on Friday in a 2 p.m. game at Hamilton.
“I’m happy to be playing for a league championship after all this team has been through,” Gasca said.
Sophomore quarterback Robbie Blosser and senior receiver Kemontae Dafney have led a resurgence. The team is young, has overcome injuries and seems to be playing its best football.
Now the Gondoliers have to figure out how to slow down a red-hot Yankees team that has one of the best junior quarterbacks in the City Section in Armani Rogers.
