Center Ryan Hollins agrees to deal with Clippers

Continuing in their push to build a solid team for next season, the Clippers on Thursday reached an agreement with free-agent center Ryan Hollins.

Hollins is expected to sign a one-year contract for the veteran’s minimum of $1.065 million.

He made $2.48 million last season playing for the Cleveland Cavaliers and Boston Celtics, but views coming to the Clippers as a good opportunity despite the pay cut.

“Ryan is happy to be a Clipper,” Hollins’ agent, Todd Ramasar, said. “He’s happy to be back in L.A. and he’s looking forward to helping the Clippers.”

Hollins, a 7-footer who attended UCLA and Muir High in Pasadena, averaged 3.4 points and 2.1 rebounds in 13.4 minutes last season in 39 games with Cleveland and Boston. He has averaged 4.2 points and 2.3 rebounds in 13 minutes a game over his six-year NBA career.

Hollins is expected to be the fourth big man in the Clippers’ rotation, playing behind starters Blake Griffin and DeAndre Jordan and reserve Lamar Odom.

He is not expected to play heavy minutes, but he does offer the Clippers another option in case of foul trouble or injuries. The Clippers like Hollins’ size, his ability to run the court, play defense, rebound, set screens and hustle.

Hollins, who will be 28 in October, played in 17 playoff games with the Celtics last season, averaging 1.5 points and 1.6 rebounds in 10 minutes per game.

Thus far this off-season the Clippers have acquired Odom from the Dallas Mavericks, re-signed Chauncey Billups, and signed free-agent guard Jamal Crawford and forward Grant Hill. After Hollins signs his contract the Clippers will have a 12-man roster. They probably will sign one or two more players.
