Washington Kastles are on the verge of breaking a Lakers record

As if things haven’t been bad enough for the Lakers. First, Kobe Bryant tears an Achilles’ tendon. Then they get swept out of the playoffs. Then they try to convince Dwight Howard to stay, only to see him leave for Houston.

Now, the crushing blow, worse than the other three combined: The Lakers hold the U.S. pro team sports record for most consecutive victories, with 33 during the 1971-72 season. But that could soon come to an end.

The Washington Kastles of World Team Tennis have won 32 consecutive matches. Monday night, they try to join the Lakers atop the all-time greats when they play host to the New York Sportimes. They could break the record Tuesday when they play the Boston Lobsters.

It’s just too much, Lakers fans. This may be the blow that sets the franchise back decades. How can they recover? If Martina Hingis leads the Kastles to victory Monday night and Tuesday, will she ever be able to show her face at Staples Center again? Has she ever even been to Staples Center?

So many questions, so little time.
