Angels acquire outfielder Collin Cowgill from New York Mets

DETROIT — The Angels on Tuesday acquired outfielder Collin Cowgill from the New York Mets for minor league outfielder Kyle Johnson. Cowgill, who was designated for assignment by the Mets on June 18, was added to the 40-man roster and optioned to triple-A Salt Lake.

Cowgill, 27, has played 97 big-league games with Arizona (2011), Oakland (2012) and New York (2013), batting .237 with four home runs and 26 runs batted in, and he was the opening-day center fielder for the Mets this season, becoming the second player in franchise history to hit a grand slam on opening day.

In 23 games for the Mets this season, Cowgill, who bats right-handed and can play all three outfield spots, hit .180 (11 for 61) with two homers and eight RBIs. To make room for Cowgill on the 40-man roster, the Angels moved reliever Ryan Madson to the 60-day disabled list.

Johnson, 23, appeared in 67 games for Class-A Burlington, hitting .310 with two homers, 16 doubles and 30 RBIs. He was a 25th-round pick in the 2012 draft out of Washington State.
