Australians ramp up security precautions for 2014 Sochi Olympics

SOCHI, Russia — Concerned about the safety of their team, Australian Olympic officials have put restrictions on the movement of athletes during the 2014 Sochi Games.

At a Sunday news conference, chef de mission Ian Chesterman said team members must remain in secured areas and travel only on the official transportation system.

“I don’t think it will detract from the experience because the highlights of these Games are the regions they can still go to,” Chesterman said. “It’s where all the action is.”

At a separate news conference, International Olympic Committee spokesman Mark Adams said the IOC has not advised the Australians or any other team in regards to security practices.

“Each national Olympic committee has its own rules,” he said.

There have been terrorist threats made against the Sochi Games, which are relatively close to the North Caucasus, where Islamist militants have waged a violent insurgency.
