Kings Coach Darryl Sutter joins exclusive Cup Club (bring your bling)

Kings Coach Darryl Sutter joined a pretty exclusive club Friday: coaches who have won more than one Stanley Cup.

Only 15 have done it in the history of the NHL, which pre-dates the stock market crash — the 1929 stock market crash.

Sutter has two titles, tying him for 10th on the all-time list. This one was a much more wild ride than the Point A-to-Point B journey the Kings traveled in 2012. That was, in Disney ride terms, the Casey Jr. Train. This season was more like Big Thunder Mountain.

“We did it a different way in [2011-12],” Sutter said. “That’s something that I don’t think could ever happen again if you go back to that because of winning as a road team all the time.”

This title, Sutter said, “was was totally different. A lot of new players in our lineup. During the Olympics, I always thought about this, How are we going to beat Chicago? How are we going to beat Chicago?”

In seven games, as it turned out.

Sutter will not catch the all-time leader … or even the No. 2 guy on the list. Scott Bowman (Montreal Canadiens, Pittsburgh Penguins, Detroit Red Wings) has nine Cups. Toe Blake (Montreal) has eight.

Hap Day, who won five with the Toronto Maple Leafs, is also likely out of reach.

That Brings us to fourth place, where Dick Irvin (Toronto Montreal), Punch Imlach (Toronto), Al Arbour (New York Islanders) and Glen Sather (Edmonton Oilers) all have four.

Sutter would likely be happy just to one-up the Chicago Blackhawks’ Joel Quenneville, who is one of seven coaches with two Cups.
