Yankees’ Derek Jeter fractures ankle; will miss rest of playoffs
In an eventful 12th-inning loss to the Detroit Tigers in Game 1 of the American League Championship Series, the New York Yankees lost home-field advantage and captain Derek Jeter.
Jeter will miss the rest of the postseason with a left ankle fracture. His recovery is estimated at three months.
Yankees Manager Joe Girardi said, “His ankle fractured. So he’s out. He’s out. They talked about a three-month recovery period. Won’t jeopardize his career, but he will not be playing for us any more this year.”
New York will activate Eduardo Nunez for Game 2 on Sunday night as the Yankees try to even the best-of-seven series.
Girardi and the rest of the Yankees know they will miss Jeter and his fortitude.
“He said, ‘No, do not carry me.’ That is the kind of guy he is,” Girardi said. Unfortunately, Jeter did need to be assisted from the field.
“I can’t tell you how much I appreciate his toughness and his grit,” Girardi said. “It’s, to me, a great example for everyone. And I am not just talking about athletes, I am just talking about everyone that goes through struggles in life or goes through pain in life.”
Tigers outfielder Delmon Young, who had a big hand in the victory, said it was difficult to see the Yankees’ all-time leader in playoff games exit the field.
“He is an idol for many baseball players,” Young said.
