Tiger Woods’ niece Cheyenne wins her first pro golf tournament

Tiger Woods’ niece, Cheyenne Woods, has claimed her first victory on a major professional tour by shooting a final-round 69 at the Australian Ladies Masters on Sunday in Gold Coast, Australia.

She finished with a four-round total of 16-under 276 to edge runner-up Minjee Lee, a 17-year-old amateur from Australia, by two strokes. Stacy Lee Bregman of South Africa and Camilla Lennarth of Sweden tied for third at 12 under.

Like her famous uncle, she took command of the tournament with a birdie on a par-five hole, No. 15, at the Royal Pines Resort course to open a two-stroke lead she maintained on the final three holes.

Cheyenne Woods took to Twitter after winning the event, which is sanctioned by the European and Australian women’s pro tours.

The 23-year-old from Phoenix -- who is the daughter of Tiger Woods’ half-brother, Earl Woods Jr. -- was an All-American player at Wake Forest but has struggled to make the LPGA Tour, having missed the cut during qualifying last December.

“This is a huge accomplishment for me,” Woods said after her victory. “The Ladies European Tour has been great to be able to play this last year, I’ve been able to see all of these great players, play with Solheim Cup members, so I’ve learned so much from all of these girls and to be able to come out here and actually compete with them and come out on top was huge for me.

“I’m just really proud with how I played this week and followed through all four days and finished strong.”

Woods, who won her first pro tournament in 2012 during a mini-tour event, will play next week in the LPGA Tour-sanctioned Women’s Australian Open.
