Visiting Big Sur
THE BEST WAY TO BIG SUR
Big Sur Valley is about 300 miles north of Los Angeles and 26 miles south of Carmel on California’s Central Coast in Monterey County.
WHERE TO STAY
Kirk Creek Campground, (877) 444-6777, https://www.recreation.gov, is on the western side of Highway 1 near Milepost 19 in southern Big Sur. It has 37 sites with picnic tables, fire rings, pedestal barbecues and restroom facilities. Sites are $22 a night.
Pfeiffer Big Sur State Park, (800) 444-7275, https://www.reserveamerica.com, is about a quarter of a mile south of Milepost 47 on the eastern side of Highway 1 in Big Sur Valley. It has more than 200 sites equipped with all the above. Standard sites are $35 a night.
