Baseball: John Vergara strikes out 13 in Marshall’s 8-0 win over San Fernando
John Vergara, a senior left-hander whose seasons ended prematurely the last two seasons because of freak injuries, is healthy and dominating in the City Section.
He struck out 13 on Saturday and threw a three-hitter to help Marshall defeat San Fernando, 8-0. Earlier this season, he shut out Birmingham, 3-0. Marshall is 11-2-1.
Birmingham defeated Roosevelt, 4-3. Carlos Camarena and Jose Jimenez had two hits each for Roosevelt. Isaac Meza went two for three, including a game-tying RBI in the seventh. Edgar Rivas had a sacrifice fly to drive in the go-ahead run.
Banning defeated Verdugo Hills, 6-2. Junior Ivan Martinez struck out six and walked none in a complete game. Anthony Valadez went two for two with two RBI.
Valencia defeated Cypress, 10-6. Devin Davis hit a grand slam and was a single away from hitting for the cycle.
Alemany defeated Simi Valley, 1-0, behind Carter Yankie, who struck out seven and threw a three-hitter. The Warriors are 11-2 with seven consecutive victories.
San Dimas improved to 11-0 with a 2-0 win over La Palma Kennedy. Jacob Castillo struck out 14 and allowed two hits.
Sylmar defeated Narbonne, 7-1, behind Josh Meza, who threw a complete game and also had two doubles.
North Hollywood defeated Van Nuys, 3-2. Ryan Ruiz hit a two-run home run.
El Camino Real defeated San Pedro, 12-2, in six innings. Jordan Berg struck out nine and Eric Yang had three hits and three RBI.
Glendora defeated El Toro, 5-4, in nine innings. Nick Kaye went four for four with two RBI. Glendora defeated Capistrano Valley, 6-5.
La Habra defeated Loyola, 4-3, in 10 innings. Matt McGeagh had three hits for Loyola, which also lost to Jesuit, 8-6.
Redondo defeated Santa Fe, 5-3. Duncan McKinnon and Cole Henderson each had two hits.
Aliso Niguel defeated West Torrance, 5-0. Ethan Butka threw the shutout.
Dana Hills defeated Riverside Poly, 5-3. Jay Schuyler hit a three-run home run. Dana Hills and La Sierra tied, 2-2, after nine innings.
Taft defeated Garfield, 13-3. Jake Stacy had a three-run home run and Jayson Newman hit another home run. Palos Verdes defeated Cleveland, 2-1. Ben Kaser had a home run and Raudel Martinez had three hits in a 10-3 win over Loara.
Buena defeated Glendale, 8-0, and 3-2. Austin Rubick struck out seven in the shutout. Mira Costa defeated Dos Pueblos, 9-3.
Santa Margarita defeated La Quinta, 6-1. In game two of a 9-0 win, Conner Hilburn, Ryan Buonato and Nick Meyer combined for a three-hit shutout. Nick Wallace had two doubles.
