California ranks high for workplace discrimination complaints |
Employees complain more about discrimination in workplaces in Texas, Florida and California than anywhere else in the country, according to a report this week from the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission.
Texas has 10% of all claims, with nearly 10,000 of the record 99,947 charges filed with the federal agency. Florida is next, with 8.1% of all complaints, and California, with 7.2%, is third.
Granted, the three states are some of the most populous in the country. But the spread of the types of complaints is similar across the U.S.
In California, nearly 45% of grievances allege that employers retaliated against a worker who complained about bias. A third of charges focus on race-based slights, 29% on disability, nearly 27% on gender and more than a quarter on age.
California has one of the nation’s largest civil rights agencies, the Department of Fair Employment and Housing. This year, however, the agency began consolidating branches to cut costs and preserve jobs.
