Florence and the Machine to hit stage at LACMA’s Art + Film Gala

British pop-rockers Florence and the Machine will be the musical attraction this fall for the Los Angeles County Museum of Art’s second annual Art + Film Gala.

The band, whose booking LACMA announced Tuesday, provides both typographical consistency and a musical and generational contrast to last year’s inaugural Art + Film Gala headliner, Stevie Wonder.

Big-voiced, red-haired Florence Welch debuted in 2009 as an heiress to the Kate Bush-led lineage of gothically dramatic British art-pop divas, while displaying soul music influences as well. Florence and the Machine’s second album, “Ceremonials,” was released last fall.

The 2011 gala raised $3 million toward LACMA’s bid to bolster the presence of film at the museum. Leonardo DiCaprio and museum trustee Eva Chow are back as co-chairs for the Oct. 27 party, and Gucci is again the leading sponsor.

Stanley Kubrick and Los Angeles artist Ed Ruscha will be the honorees, with Steven Spielberg offering a tribute to Kubrick, who died in 1999. Last year’s gala honorees were John Baldessari and Clint Eastwood.

Besides being feted at the gala, Ruscha and Kubrick are the subjects of coming exhibitions at LACMA. “Ed Ruscha: Standard” opens Sept. 22 at the Broad Contemporary Art Museum, and gala attendees will get a preview of “Stanley Kubrick,” which opens Nov. 1 in the Art of the Americas building.

The Kubrick show deploys set models, props, costumes, script pages and still photography for the first museum retrospective on the auteur of “2001: A Space Odyssey,” “A Clockwork Orange,” “The Shining,” “Full Metal Jacket” and “Lolita,” among others.
