Tribune makes big deal! ‘The Heat’ takes ‘White House’ down.

The Skinny: Sunday nights aren’t the same without “Mad Men” or “Veep” but I am enjoying Netflix’s new show “Orange Is the Black,” which debuts for regular folks later this month. Monday’s headlines include a big deal by Tribune Co., the weekend box office report and more bad news for Richard Nanula, who took a leave as chairman of Miramax last week.

Daily Dose: Al Jazeera America continues to beef up its staff in advance of launching here in late August. The latest to join the news network is former CNN and NBC broadcast journalist Soledad O’Brien, who will serve as a special correspondent. Her production company Starfish Media Group will also produce documentary fare for the channel.

Getting bigger. Tribune Co., parent of the Los Angeles Times, is acquiring 19 TV stations from Local TV Holdings in a deal valued at $2.73 billion. The acquisition will increase the number of stations owned by Tribune to 42. The company will also become the biggest owner of Fox affiliates. The deal is the latest evidence of consolidation in the local TV station industry. Last month, Gannett Co. acquired Belo Corp. Taking “White House” down. “Monsters University” held on to first place at the box office with a weekend take of $46.2 million. The real surprise was the strength of “The Heat,” a female buddy comedy starring Sandra Bullock and Melissa McCarthy that took in $40 million and crushed “White House Down,” the action movie starring Channing Tatum and Jamie Foxx, which made only $25.7 million. Less is more. Summer is usually known for big budget blockbusters. But this year, there have been a few high-profile flops including “After Earth” and “White House Down.” This weekend, “Despicable Me 2” is likely to beat Disney’s expensive new version of “The Lone Ranger.” The Wall Street Journal on the surprises of summer.

New home for “New Girl.”Netflix has acquired streaming rights for reruns of the Fox sitcom “New Girl.” The deal could be very lucrative for 20th Century Fox Television and the Chernin Group, the two companies behind the comedy that stars Zooey Deschanel. Netflix could end up paying a high six-figure per-episode fee for the show. More from the Los Angeles Times.

When it rains it pours. Last week, Miramax Chairman and Colony Capital principal Richard Nanula took a leave of absenceafter pictures of someone reportedly identified as him with an adult film performer appeared online. Now Varietyhas dug up a sexual harassment suit that a former Colony Capital paralegal filed against Nanula last January.
