Note to Bethenny Frankel: Not everyone with Internet access shares your sense of humor.
Frankel, the onetime "Real Housewives of New York City" star and founder of Skinnygirl Cocktails, caused a stir with an Instagram photo she posted Sunday of herself wearing 4-year-old daughter Bryn's Hello Kitty jammies.
"This is my daughter's nightgown and PJ shorts," she wrote in the caption for the picture, shown above. "Think we're ready to start sharing clothes yet?"
Given that the nightgown (a garment that typically ends below a person's knees, no matter their age or weight) was skin-tight and barely made it down past Frankel's waist, the answer would appear to be "no," and the game would appear to be "dress-up."
Still, Frankel -- whose lifestyle brand focuses on thinness, who has admitted a past of obsessive dieting and focus on her weight, and whose BMI hovers on the underweight side of normal, if reports of her height and weight are to be believed -- made herself an easy target by squeezing into a child's clothing and making a thing of it, even if the thing was intended to be amusing. Memories of Frankel's recently settled custody battle with ex-husband Jason Hoppy are still floating out there as well.
So some folks on social media decided she looked "gross," was "sick" and "should be ashamed." Commenters on various stories about the snapshot fretted about Frankel's parenting skills and her potential for "body-shaming" her daughter. One even compared the "Naturally Thin" author to parents who don't understand why it's bad to leave a child in a hot car.
"BREAKING NEWS! World Scandal: Former reality star, failed talk show host & cocktail maven jokes by wearing her kids' pjs! #itcantbetrue," Frankel quipped Monday on Twitter in reaction to the hubbub.
By way of explanation, she also wrote: "When ur 4 year old peanut says 'mommy please put my dress on' & giggles uncontrollably, u do what ur told."
No word on whether Bryn also suggested that Mommy have a picture taken and post said picture online. That's probably a whole 'nother story, but perhaps Frankel and Kim Kardashian could get together to strategize over their parenting revelations? Maybe they could invite Steven Spielberg along as a comedy consultant, or Adam Richman to advise on weight issues.
What's truly disturbing? The Hello Kitty slippers Frankel was wearing appear to have been made for an adult. We'll leave it to others to opine on the condition of the room.
All that said, those who truly love Bethenny's look can still make it their own -- for less than $20 on Amazon.
