American Cinematheque celebrates ‘Kino Croatia’
The American Cinematheque is celebrating the latest films from Croatia with a mini-festival, “Kino Croatia: New Films of 2013,” which opens Friday at the Egyptian Theatre in Hollywood and then moves Saturday and Sunday to the Aero in Santa Monica.
The series opens with Vlatka Vorkapic’s 2013 film “Sonja and the Bull,” a romantic comedy set in the world of bullfighting. First-time director Vorkapic will discuss his debut feature after the screening.
Saturday’s double bill at the Aero kicks off with the 2012 comedy “Night Boats,” about an elderly man and woman living at a retirement home who fall madly in love and decide to escape their dreary existence by running away. Director Igor Mirkovic will chat about the film after the screening.
Also playing is Branko Schmidt’s 2012 film “Vegetarian Cannibal,” which was the official Croatian submission for the 2012 foreign-language film Oscar. The dark drama revolves around a dishonest gynecologist.
The festival concludes Sunday with the 2013 family film “The Mysterious Boy,” directed by Drazen Zarkovic, and 2011’s “Kotlovina,” a 2011 multi-award-winning family drama about three sisters and their families who have an uneasy reunion after several years. Tomislav Radic directed.
