Tributes to Mary Pickford, Michel Legrand among week’s highlights

It’s a big weekend for fans of legendary screen star Mary Pickford and Oscar-winning composer Michel Legrand (“Summer of ‘42”).

Christine Schmidt, editor of “Mary Pickford: Queen of the Movies,” will be talking about the new book and singing copies at various screenings of films starring “America’s Sweetheart.”

Thursday evening she’ll be at the Alex Theatre in Glendale hosting a screening of Pickford’s 1924 classic, “Dorothy Vernon of Haddon Hall.” www.alextheatre.org

On Saturday afternoon at the American Cinematheque’s Egyptian Theatre in Hollywood, Schmidt will be on hand for a screening of 1929’s “Taming of the Shrew,” the first sound picture starring Pickford and her then-husband Douglas Fairbanks. www.americancinematheque.com

Her final appearance will be Wednesday at the Hollywood Heritage Museum for a screening of Pickford’s 1918 “Johanna Enlists.” www.hollywoodheritage.org

Renowned composer Legrand is being feted at two American Cinematheque sites, beginning Friday at the Egyptian with a screening of Barbra Streisand’s 1983 directorial debut, “Yentl.” He’ll also be appearing Saturday at the Aero in Santa Monica for a screening of 1967’s “The Young Girls of Rochefort” and 1989’s “Five Days in June.” Other programs include 1964’s “Band of Outsiders” and 1968’s “The Thomas Crown Affair” Sunday at the Aero and 1972’s “The Outside Man” and 2003’s “The Swimming Pool” Tuesday at the Aero.

The Cinematheque is also paying tribute to Oscar-winning tough guy Lee Marvin with “Call in the Marine: Lee Marvin on the Big Screen.” The two-fisted action begins Friday at the Aero with the taut 1967 film noir “Point Blank” and 1964’s thriller “The Killers.” Dwayne Epstein, author of the new book “Lee Marvin: Point Blank,” the actor’s son, Christopher Marvin, and actor Clu Gulager will be on hand to talk about Marvin. www.americancinematheque.com

Oscar-winning cinematographer Janusz Kaminski, who is nominated again this year for “Lincoln,” will be participating in a Q&A; Thursday evening at Film Independent at LACMA’s screening of the cult 1971 action film “Vanishing Point,” directed by Richard C. Sarafian and starring Barry Newman and Cleavon Little. The screening takes place at the Leo S. Bing Theater. https://lacma.org

Elizabeth Taylor, Mia Farrow and Robert Mitchum star in Joseph Losey’s 1968 camp delight, “Secret Ceremony,” screening Friday evening at the Cinefamily at the Silent Movie Theatre. www.cinefamily.org

In honor of Charles Darwin’s birthday, the Skirball Center is offering a free Tuesday matinee of Stanley Kramer’s 1960 drama “Inherit the Wind,” starring Spencer Tracy and Fredric March. The drama is based on the famous Scopes Trial of the 1920s. www.skirball.org
