Robert Downey Jr., Mark Ruffalo among BAFTA L.A. award winners

Robert Downey Jr., Mark Ruffalo, Emma Watson, Judi Dench and director Mike Leigh were announced Thursday morning as this year’s honorees for the BAFTA Los Angeles Jaguar Britannia Awards.

The honors will be presented at a ceremony Oct. 30 at the Beverly Hilton Hotel hosted by comic and actor Rob Brydon. BBC America will air the show on Nov. 2. The British Academy of Film and Television Arts Los Angeles board of directors chooses the recipients.

Downey, who stars with Robert Duvall in “The Judge” opening Oct. 10, is this year’s recipient of the Stanley Kubrick Britannia Award for Excellence in Film. Prior winners include Warren Beatty and Tom Hanks.

Ruffalo, who was nominated for an Emmy this year for the HBO film “The Normal Heart” and will be seen in November in “Foxcatcher,” is being honored with the Britannia Humanitarian Award for his work with Water Defense. Ruffalo co-founded a nonprofit organization dedicated to keeping waterways and drinking water sources free from contamination. Prior winners include Idris Elba and Don Cheadle.

British director Mike Leigh, whose latest film “Mr. Turner” opens in December, will receive the John Schlesinger Award for British Artist of the Year. This honor pays tribute to a British artist “whose outstanding performances in a year have demonstrated the high quality of their craftsmanship. “

Emma Watson (the “Harry Potter” franchise, “Noah”) is the recipient of the Britannia Award for British Artist of the Year. Daniel Craig, Kate Winslet and Michael Sheen are among the previous winners.

Oscar-winning actress Judi Dench (“Mrs. Brown”), who will be seen next year in “The Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel,” is the recipient of the Albert R. Broccoli Britannia Award for Worldwide Contribution.
