D'Angelo to perform on Saturday Night Live on Jan. 31

A rare appearance by a TV-shy performer: D'Angelo to gig Saturday Night Live on Jan. 31

The soul singer D'Angelo will perform on "Saturday Night Live" at the end of the month, marking his most high-profile televised appearance since releasing his long-delayed album "Black Messiah" in December. The singer will appear on the Jan. 31 episode, which, according to news first reported by People, will feature actor J.K. Simmons as host.

D'Angelo is notoriously TV shy, rarely appearing on the small screen during his career. Most memorably, at the MTV Movie Awards in 2000 he delivered a searing take on "Devil's Pie" in support of his then-new album, "Voodoo."

For the upcoming Saturday Night Live set, D'Angelo will be accompanied by his current band, the Vanguard. Then, as now, that remarkable unit is propelled by the Roots' drummer Questlove.
