Timberlake No. 1 again, we think
JUSTIN TIMBERLAKE is listed at No. 1 again on the nation’s album charts this week, although it’s not clear exactly how many CDs he sold -- or how many anyone else sold, for that matter -- because of a problem with incomplete reports, according to Nielsen SoundScan, the company that tracks sales.
SoundScan issued an advisory stating that the new chart was based in part on extrapolations due to missing information from a “data supplier in the retail chain strata.” A spokesman said that he couldn’t elaborate, but the industry word is that a national chain did not submit sales totals. That data will be processed soon and totals recalculated in the days to come, they said.
The chart that was released -- sort of Nielsen SoundScan’s best guess -- credits Timberlake’s “FutureSex/LoveSounds” with sales of 217,000 copies. The next three spots belonged to debuts: Clay Aiken’s “A Thousand Different Ways” (205,000 copies), Fergie’s “The Dutchess” (142,000) and Kenny Chesney’s “Live Those Songs Again” (137,000).
Next week, watch for the skinny on the new-look Janet Jackson, who hopes to reconnect with fans after the disappointment of 2004’s “Damita Jo.” The early word: Jackson, after a stop on Oprah Winfrey’s show and a promotion at AOL.com, will vie with rapper Ludacris for No. 1.
