Taylor Swift, Carrie Underwood dazzle on ACM awards red carpet

Perhaps taking a cue from Beyonce’s showstopping, barely there Grammys dress by L.A. designer Michael Costello, country music divas embraced the sheer-and-sexy cutout trend on the red carpet at the American Country Music Awards held Sunday night in Las Vegas.

It was impossible to ignore Shakira’s Zuhair Murad teal blue silk jersey long-sleeve gown with embroidered detail and nude silk cutouts snaking down the sides.

Sheryl Crow wore a black sheer, diamond cutout gown by Christian Siriano. And Kimberly Perry chose a similar style with a geometric pattern by another maximalist designer, Georges Hobeika.

All three dresses looked a little too wintry for my taste. This is Vegas in April after all.

As usual, Taylor Swift went her own way in a custom ivory and black J. Mendel ensemble that was one of the better iterations of the ubiquitous bare midriff trend on the red carpet. The ivory crepe top had cutouts at the shoulders, and the black skirt was slit up to the thigh.

Carrie Underwood also looked great in a silver and ivory bugle bead fringe gown from Oscar de la Renta’s spring collection. Seasonally appropriate and a swinging good time--perfect for Vegas.

Then there was Kacey Musgraves, who took the best album award, playing the sweetheart in a ruched baby blue Miu Miu gown with a plasticky belt.

I like the way this look teeters on the edge of good and bad taste, chic and cheap (especially with the blue eyeshadow). It strikes me as being very country, with a wink and a smile. If only she’d added a touch of gingham, that would have really been fun.
