La Mer adds new a beauty line of foundations, concealers, powder and brushes

La Mer, the prestigious line of creams, moisturizers and lotions that has a near-fanatical following, isn’t straying too far from its base with its first color offering.

Skincolor de la Mer is a line of foundations, concealers, powder and a couple of impossibly plush brushes that the New York-based brand launched at an intimate breakfast in Malibu earlier this fall, bowing in time for the holidays.

The foundation, which comes in 15 shades, contains Miracle Broth, which is at the core of the La Mer collection. Its potent sea-kelp-based formulation resulted from 12 years and 6,000 experiments by the late aerospace engineer Max Huber half a century ago.

“Our goal was to create a very healthy, luminous look, which is the look of La Mer,” said Clyde Johnson, executive director of global events and head of skincare artistry at the brand. “Our clients have learned to expect healthy and energized-looking skin.”

The foundations are in keeping with the trend toward light and long-wearing textures, providing the skin with natural coverage while evening out fine lines. Johnson said the current batch of shades was curated to match most skin shades. Three more colors will be introduced next fall.

“We want the foundations to be flexible and create different textures and finishes so there are a lot of opportunities to play with them,” he said.

At the event, celebrity makeup artist Kayleen McAdams did just that. She used the new products on a model to convey the “no-makeup” look, and also showed how to “nontour.”

“Nontouring is where people still like the idea of contouring, but blend it in so well that it’s seamless,” she said. “I like to use one foundation color on the center of the face and another on the perimeter and then blend, blend, blend so there is very subtle definition.”

Another pro tip: a few drops of La Mer’s the Renewal Oil, which feels oil-free, mixed with the foundation for a more flawless finish.

Skincolor de la Mer is priced from $70 for the foundation brush to $110 for the Soft Fluid Long Wear Foundation Broad Spectrum SPF 20 and is available at major retailers such as Nordstrom, Neiman Marcus and Bloomingdale’s and at cremedelamer.com.
