CW Network is adapting young adult series ‘Embrace’
Few novelists get a better welcome to L.A. than Jessica Shirvington. She had just flown into the city from her native Australia on Sunday when she learned that her debut novel had been picked up for a possible TV series. “Embrace,” a young adult series about sexy teen angels at war, is in development for a weekly, hourlong TV drama with the CW Network, Amblin Entertainment and CBS Television Studios, according to a spokesperson for Sourcebooks, which published the first two books in the series this year.
“My role in all this now is to pretty much get on my knees and pray,” said Shirvington, who kicks off her tour for the second book in her series, “Entice,” Tuesday night at the Mysterious Galaxy bookstore in Redondo Beach. “I think I just hold that position, and then everybody else at the CW and Amblin and CBS do the hard work.”
“Embrace” centers around a 17-year-old named Violet who learns she is part angel and becomes entangled in a centuries-old war between angel factions. “She’s not forced into this world of angels and exiled angels,” Shirvington said, “but the choices she makes put her there and the people she cares about and love take her further into this world.”
Some in the industry speculate that “Embrace” was picked up to fill the longstanding void that “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” left when it went off the CW in 2003. Another young-adult book series about angels, the bestselling “Daughter of Smoke & Bone,” by Laini Taylor, was optioned by Universal Pictures last year.
