Rodeo Drive Walk of Style honors Diana Vreeland
James Galanos, Fred Hayman and Peggy Moffitt stepped out to see the Rodeo Drive Walk of Style honor fashion legend Diana Vreeland on Monday with a bronze plaque on the storied boulevard. Vreeland is the 19th recipient to be inducted into the Rodeo Drive Walk of Style and the first fashion editor to be recognized with this honor.
The Rodeo Drive Walk of Style award is given to those who have made significant contributions to the fashion and entertainment worlds. Past recipients include Giorgio Armani, Tom Ford, Manolo Blahnik and Salvatore Ferragamo. The winners are chosen by representatives from the media, entertainment and fashion industries.
Vreeland was a fixture in the fashion world for more than 50 years, having been a fashion editor at Harper’s Bazaar for 26 years and an editor-in-chief at Vogue. She also served as a fashion adviser to Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis and helped catapult Twiggy and a number of other young models and celebrities to stardom.
Members of Vreeland’s family and friends attended the ceremony, and many shared anecdotes about the late editor.
“She of course had instantly recognized [that] to survive as a woman alone in the jungle of New York, in the fashion world, she would need to rise to the top, become instantly recognizable, sought after for her opinion and imprimatur, seen everywhere and in the company of celebrated people,” said son Tim Vreeland. “And she was.”
Vreeland shared how on his mother’s visits to Beverly Hills, actor Warren Beatty would pick her up in a red sports car and drive her up to Mullholland Drive to hang out with Jack Nicholson, Cher, Julie Christie and Anjelica Huston.
Huston, who is a member of the Rodeo Walk of Style committee, was on location shooting, but provided a letter for the ceremony.
“Diana Vreeland was simply the most stylish woman I ever met,” she wrote. “She made it acceptable for women to be ambitious, for women to be outlandish, to be extraordinary and for women to garner attention.”
Vreeland is featured in the new film “Diana Vreeland: The Eye Has to Travel,” slated to open Sept. 21. The film was produced and directed by Vreeland’s granddaughter-in-law, Lisa Immordino Vreeland.
