Movember specials, baking with Craig Ponsford, SLS anniversary menu

Muddy Leek is offering a free appetizer to anyone participating in Movember by having a mustache or a beard, or wearing a mustache T-shirt. The freebies are valid for lunch or dinner between the hours of 11 a.m. and 10 p.m., Tuesday through Saturday until Nov. 30. The restaurant is also serving a special John Waters cocktail made with Wahaka mezcal, Chareau aloe liqueur, cucumber jalapeño syrup, fresh squeezed grapefruit juice, bruleed grapefruit, Meyer lemon zest, and it’s dressed up with a ‘stache swizzle stick. Hotel Erwin will have a Movember Happy Hour every day from 5 to 7 p.m. for the month of November. Specials include the LN2 Popcorn made with bacon, caramel, chive and liquid nitrogen; Down South chicken salad with a biscuit and Sriracha aioli; and poutine with pork belly, egg, lamb gravy and aged cheddar. A selection of wine and beer will be available for $5. A portion of the proceeds will go to the Movember Foundation. The hotel is also throwing a Venice Beach Stouts N Staches Fest on Nov. 23 from 2 to 8 p.m. The festival will take over Windward Circle with participating local restaurants and bars. Tickets are $10 if purchased in advance and $15 at the event. There will also be $50 VIP tickets that include special treatment at High, Hotel Erwin’s rooftop lounge, as well as Larry’s Loft, hosted beer from Venice Beach Beer Company, “man”-icures, massages, shaves and more. Award-winning baker Craig Ponsford will teach a six-hour, hands-on course on whole grain flour made with California wheat. Ponsford will demonstrate making English muffins, cinnamon morning buns, vegetable croissants, pretzels and challah. The class will take place Nov. 20 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Guittard Chocolate facility in Los Angeles. Lunch, prepared by Donald Wressell, is included. The class is limited to 12 students.
