History of bread: On June 8, the Culinary Historians of Southern California will present a talk by William Rubel called "Song of Wheat: The History of Bread, Grains and Leavenings from Prehistory to Today." Rubel will address the general history of bread and why we eat the breads we do today, with a focus on choice of flour, size and shape, crust and crumb, types of leavening and, of course, flavor. The event at the Los Angeles Public Library starts at 10:30 a.m. and is free and open to the public. www.chscsite.org.
