Tyson Foods Inc. is recalling more than 75,000 pounds of chicken nuggets believed to be contaminated with plastic shavings. A small number of consumers contacted the Missouri-based company complaining of minor oral injuries associated with the nuggets.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service lists the following products in the recall. “Tyson Fully Cooked White Meat Chicken Nuggets” in 5-pound bags with a “Best If Used By” date of Jan. 26, 2015 or Feb. 16, 2015 and the manufacturer codes 0264SDL0315 through 19 and 0474SDL0311 through 14. These bags were shipped nationwide to Sam’s Club stores in late January and February.

The recall also applies to 20-pound bulk packs of “Spare Time Fully Cooked Nugget-Shaped Chicken Breast Pattie Fritters with Rib Meat” with the same “Best If Used By” dates and manufacturer codes as the nuggets. These products were shipped for institutional use in Indiana and Arkansas.

According to Tyson, the problem was traced back to a product scraper inside a blending machine at one of the company’s 40 production facilities.

If a consumer has a bag of the affected product, Tyson is asking them to discard the product and cut the UPC and date code from the back of the bag and mail it to Tyson Foods - CP631 P.O. Box 2020 Springdale, AR 72765-9989. You can also call Tyson Foods Consumer Services toll free at (866) 328-3156.
