Keira Knightley has played numerous period heroines on screen, from her Oscar-nominated role in “Pride and Prejudice” to this year’s “The Imitation Game.” Next year, the British actress will once again don the wardrobe of another era in the play “Thérèse Raquin,” which will mark her Broadway debut.

“Thérèse Raquin,” adapted from the Émile Zola novel, is set to open Oct. 29, 2015, in a production from the Roundabout Theatre Company in New York. The new adaptation of the novel is written by Helen Edmundson, the British playwright whose other stage adaptations include “Coram Boy” and “War and Peace.”

The production, directed by Evan Cabnet, will be part of the Roundabout’s 50th-anniversary season, which will also include an off-Broadway production of Stephen Karam’s “The Humans” and other productions to be announced.

Zola’s 19th century novel tells the story of a young woman who enters into an unhappy marriage and later embarks on a love affair with her husband’s friend. The novel has been adapted for the stage numerous times by Zola himself and other writers.

Knightley has appeared on London stages in Moliere’s “The Misanthrope” and Lillian Hellman’s “The Children’s Hour.”

The actress stars as code-breaker Joan Clarke in the World War II drama “The Imitation Game,” which is generating awards buzz ahead of its U.S. release this year. Knightley will also be seen in “Laggies,” an ensemble comedy by mumblecore director Lynn Shelton that opens Friday in Los Angeles.
