E.L. James’ ‘Grey’ shoots to top of Amazon bestsellers in just one day

Less than 24 hours ago, E.L. James announced that she would publish another book in her “Fifty Shades of Grey” series. And now, based on preorders, “Grey” is at the top of Amazon’s bestseller list.

“Fifty Shades of Grey” is, of course, the erotic bestseller in which innocent college student Anastasia Steele falls for billionaire Christian Grey, who introduces her to the sexual pleasures of bondage. That novel, and its sequels -- “Fifty Shades Darker” and “Fifty Shades Freed” -- are told from Steele’s point of view.

“Grey” will return to that story, told from Grey’s side. “See the world of Fifty Shades of Grey anew through the eyes of Christian Grey,” the book’s Amazon page reads. “In Christian’s own words, and through his thoughts, reflections, and dreams, E L James offers a fresh perspective on the love story that has enthralled millions of readers around the world.”

In rocketing to the top of Amazon’s bestseller list, “Grey” has shaken a few other books loose. The self-help book “The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up” has moved to No. 2; the children’s board book “First 100 Words” has dropped to No. 3; the thriller “The Girl on the Train” has fallen to No. 6; David McCullough’s “The Wright Brothers” has moved down to No. 7.

Two other summer books still only available as preorders -- “Go Set a Watchman” by Harper Lee and “Finders Keepers” by Stephen King -- have also been bumped down, to No. 8 and 9, resepctively.

When readers finally do get “Grey,” they’ll have plenty to enjoy: The paperback is 576 pages. “Grey” will be released on June 18.
