Coroner’s officials Sunday identified the man whose death at the hands of police Saturday afternoon sparked protests in South Los Angeles and Hancock Park.

The shooting victim was identified as Carnell Snell Jr., 18, of Los Angeles, said investigator Rudy Molano of the coroner’s office.

Snell was shot after he bailed out of a moving vehicle during a police pursuit in South Los Angeles around 1 p.m. Los Angeles police opened fire after chasing him down 107th Street to the back of a home, which relatives later identified as his residence.

Officers tried to stop the vehicle Snell was riding in because it had a paper license plate, which suggested that the car may have been stolen. But it’s not clear what type of vehicle it was or whether the vehicle was stolen, said LAPD spokeswoman Jenny Houser.

Police have not released any information about the driver of the vehicle, or the other passengers, one of whom also bailed out and fled from police on foot. No other arrests have been made, Houser said Sunday.

Police have not described what happened in the moments before the shooting, but an LAPD spokesman said a handgun was recovered from the scene. No further information is being released, Houser said.

Relatives described Snell, known to his family as CJ, as a respectful young man who loved skateboarding and cared deeply for his family.

Dozens of protesters gathered at the scene of Snell’s death near the intersection of 107th Street and Western Avenue on Saturday night, interrupting a police news conference and writing Snell’s name in the street in chalk.

Another group of protesters marched to Mayor Eric Garcetti’s home in Hancock Park later Saturday evening. Photos posted by a KCBS reporter Sunday show eggs that had apparently been thrown at the residence. A crew from the city arrived later to clean up. Another protest was planned for Sunday.
