Neel Kashkari wrote another seven-figure check for his gubernatorial bid Friday, according to filings with the secretary of state.

Ksahkari reported giving his campaign $1,040,000 on Friday. That’s in addition to the $2.1 million he had previously put toward the race.

The former Treasury Department official had predicted he would need “tens of millions of dollars” to compete with incumbent Democratic Gov. Jerry Brown.

But as of Sept. 30, Kashkari has raised only $5.5 million, including the money he gave himself. He had just under $680,000 in the bank at the end of September and had nearly $143,000 in outstanding debts.

Brown had more than $23 million in cash on hand as of Sept. 30 and reported no debt.

“Fighting for the poor and minority kids of this state who Jerry Brown has betrayed is just that important to Neel. He is grateful for all the support he has received, and he is absolutely committed to doing everything he can to fight for these kids,” said Mary-Sarah Kinner, communications director for Kashkari’s campaign.
