Jon Asnon made six three-pointers and finished with 38 points and Moskus had 18 points to lead University. Ivan Kovacevic had 28 points for Laguna Beach.

Tyler Carr scored 30 points to help the Lancers win the championship game of the Marmonte League.

Thousand Oaks (20-6) opened a 21-point fourth quarter lead, then barely hung on because of a standout performance by Calabasas’ Drew Housman, who finished with 36 points, 19 in the fourth quarter. Housman fouled out two defenders and made 14 of 18 free throws.

There were 54 free-throw attempts in the fourth quarter. Thousand Oaks’ Brandon Dempster made 12 of 16 free throws in the final quarter.

The Rebels were outscored, 13-4, in the first quarter and trailed, 19-6, at halftime but used a 24-5 run in the third quarter to build an insurmountable lead. John DeCarlo and Justin Hayase each had 13 points and Peter Bartlett added 10 for host Chadwick (10-13, 3-5).

The Lake Forest El Toro boys’ basketball team won’t mind sharing the South Coast League title this season.

The Chargers, ranked No. 17 in the Southland by The Times, rallied from a two-game deficit with two games to play this week and overcame a six-point second-half deficit on the road Thursday night to defeat No. 12 Mission Viejo Capistrano Valley and earn a share of the league title for the second consecutive year.

A year ago, El Toro had a two-game lead with two games to play but lost both and ended up in a three-way tie for first with Capistrano Valley and Mission Viejo.

Mission Viejo defeated Capistrano Valley on Tuesday night to move it and El Toro within a game of the Cougars, but the No. 18 Diablos missed a chance to be tri-champions Thursday night by losing a one-point game at Mission Viejo Trabuco Hills.

El Toro, playing without three-year starter Darryl Best, who was ruled academically ineligible this week, kept itself in the game by making 11 of 25 three-point shots. The final three-pointer came from Tyler Gottstein and gave the Chargers a 51-42 lead with 2 minutes 26 seconds remaining. El Toro (22-4, 8-2) them made eight of 11 free throws down the stretch to keep Capistrano Valley (23-3, 8-2) from making a late challenge.

El Toro guard Shon Waite made five of seven three-point attempts and scored 20 points and backcourt mate Kelvin Kim made four of eight three-pointer and scored 18.

``We’re an outside shooting team,’’ Waite said.

El Toro Coach Todd Dixon also credited the play of Jonathon Johnson, who held Capistrano Valley’s leading scorer, Davis Baker, to 12 points, nearly 10 below his average. Matt Ankeny led the Cougars with 19 points.

Trabuco Hills 54, Mission Viejo 53
Patrick Esguerra made a running four-foot jump shot at the buzzer to give Trabuco Hills (15-12, 4-6) the upset over No. 18 Mission Viejo (21-5, 7-3). Greg Gusiff had converted a three-point shot with about 11 seconds remaining to give the Diablos a 53-52 lead.

Adam Diaz hit the game winning 15 foot jump shot with six seconds left to lead host Northview (12-14,5-5) past Pomona (18-7, 8-2). Northview held Pomona scoreless in the first quarter and to only three points in the fourth quarter.

Santa Margarita ended a nine-game losing streak against Santa Ana Mater Dei on Tuesday night, defeating the Monarchs at Santa Margarita High.

The Eagles, ranked No. 15 in the Southland by The Times, forced No. 3 Mater Dei to miss eight of 10 field-goal attempts in the fourth quarter and rallied from a five-point deficit. Santa Margarita can earn at least a share of the league title with a victory Thursday against Anaheim Servite.

Tyler Smith provided the offense down the stretch for Santa Margarita (22-2, 4-1), scoring 12 of his game-high 21 points in the final quarter. His driving reverse layup with 1 minute 7 seconds remaining gave the Eagles a 55-53 lead. Mater Dei point guard Mike Gerrity then committed one of 13 turnovers for the Monarchs, spinning into the lane and losing the ball against a wall of defenders with 35 seconds remaining.

Santa Margarita had a chance to put the game away at the line, but missed three of four free throws in the final 23 seconds. Mater Dei (20-4, 4-1) couldn’t take advantage, however, missing two three-point attempts on its final two possessions.

The victory was Santa Margarita’s first over Mater Dei since the championship game of the Orange tournament in 1998.

``It was our turn tonight,’’ said Santa Margarita Coach Jerry DeBusk.

Mater Dei, which made just three of 21 three-point attempts in a 16-point loss to the nation’s top-ranked team, Mouth of Wilson (Va.) Oak Hill Academy, made just two of 16 against Santa Margarita and missed 34 of 49 shots overall.
