In the end, it came down to Brea Olinda’s 5-foot-10 Lauren Pedersen out-wrestling San Clemente’s 6-3 Lindsey Pluimer for a rebound and then hitting two free throws with 2.6 seconds left to secure a victory for the Ladycats at Brea Olinda.

Pedersen scored her final points -- her only ones of the second half -- with Brea Olinda clinging to a 40-39 edge. She finished with 15 in the game.

“I knew I couldn’t let her get that rebound because if she had, it probaby would have been the game,” said Pedersen, who also had eight steals and five rebounds.

Pluimer finished with 20 points and seven rebounds, and was the anchor in San Clemente’s comeback bid.

Brea Olinda had a 34-17 lead in the opening minutes of the third quarter when San Clemente went on an 18-4 run to close the gap to 38-35. Pedersen assisted on a basket by Natalie Thune for some breathing room, but Pluimer and Lauren Redfield scored on drives for San Clemente to cut the Ladycats’ edge to 40-39 with 1:07 left.

Twice Brea Olinda missed shots to put the game away in the final 30 seconds, and San Clemente had a last opportuntiy to steal victory with 18 seconds left. Kiley Jones missed from 15 feet, and then Pedersen got her big rebound and final free throws.

“Lauren Pedersen’s a winner and stepped up big,” said San Clemente Coach Mary Mulligan. “Pluimer’s a winner, too, but she has to rely on her teammates to get her the ball.”

San Clemente made just six of 18 attempts from the free-throw line while Brea Olinda converted eight of nine, and also got a huge basket at the end of the first half. In less than three seconds, Natalie Thune went coast-to-coast and dished to Megan Broadstreet for a score at the buzzer.
