The singles final featured last year’s Academy League champion, sophomore Bianca Aboubakare, versus her younger sister, freshman Carissa. Each sister came in to the match without losing a set in league play, going 72-0. Carissa won both sets from her sister, 6-2, 6-1, on the strength of her serve and more agressive play.

The doubles finals featured Tiffany Huang and Catheryn McIntyre, who had played at singles all season for St. Margaret’s but teamed up to increase their chances of making the CIF playoffs, defeating Sarah Flynn and Alle Hsu of Sage Hill, 6-4, 6-3.

Each of the finalists in singles and doubles qualify for the CIF Southern Section individual tournament starting in early December.

Junior Cassidy Grandstaff and sophomore Elizabeth Van’t Hof of Mater Dei won the doubles title after finishing second last year. They defeated teammates Andrea Zamucen, a junior who won the title last year with Carolina Velasco, and sophomore Kelli Kawabe, 6-2, 2-6, 6-3.

Tania Mahtani swept at No. 1 singles by scores of 6-1, 6-1 and a 6-2 victory over the Dons’ No. 1 Whitney Peterson. Emily Aston and Stephanie Chen swept, 6-4, 6-0, 7-6, at No. 1 doubles for host Peninsula (18-0). Matani is 44-1and Aston and Chen are 34-1 on the year.

Paige Weber and Erica Schweyer also swept, 6-3, 6-2, 6-4, at No. 2 doubles for the Panthers, who are ranked No. 1 in the Division I coaches’ poll. Santa Barbara, which is ranked No. 1 in the CIF Southern Section Division II, dropped 14-3.

Laura Mlynar of Oxford Academy won three sets, 6-4, 6-1, 7-5, at No. 1 singles and No. 3 player Diane Nguyen won, 7-5, 7-6 (4), 6-2, for Oxford Academy (9-9, 6-6) in a victory at Cerritos Sports Complex.

Sage Hill 12, St. Margaret’s 6
Sarah Geocarias led Sage Hill (11-6, 10-2) to a victory at St. Margaret’s (9-5, 8-4) by winning her singles matches 6-0, 6-2 and 6-0. Sage Hill finished second to Fairmont Prep in the league. Geocarias will enter tomorrow’s league individual finals at Balboa Bay Club in Newport Beach as the No. 3 seed in singles. Sisters Bianca and Carissa Aboubakare are the top two seeds respectively while Stephanie Langer of Sage Hill is the fourth seed.

In doubles, Jenny Chung and Julie Luzan of Fairmont Prep are the top seed followed by Sarah Flynn and Alle Hsu of Sage Hill. The No. 3 seeded team is Tiffany Haung and Kathryn McIntyre of St. Margaret’s while Elaine Kim and Ginnie Kim of Oxford Academy come in as the fourth seed. The semifinals and finals are Saturday.

Keppel senior Amber Marsden won the Almont League title for the third season in a row, defeating Sandi Chiu of Schurr, 6-3, 6-0, in the championship match after beating Tiffany Kang, also of Schurr, in the semifinals of the league tournament at Whittier Narrows Tennis Center in South El Monte.

Seniors twins Betsy and Becky Chiem of San Gabriel played with different partners most of the season but teammed to defeat defending league champions Enway Hsu and Cindy Ung of Schurr for the doubles title.

The Chiems advanced to the final match with a 6-3, 6-4 victory over Alhambra’s Helen Tran and Maggie Szeto. Hsu and Ung topped Marcela Negrete and Bonnie Chan of San Gabriel, 6-4, 6-1, in the semifinals.

Peninsula junior Tania Mahtani defeated sophomore teammate Rika Tatsuno, 6-4, 6-2, to claim the singles championship of the Bay League tournament at the Kramer Club in Rancho Palos Verdos Verdes.

Mahtani, who is 41-1 in sets this season, beat Mira Costa senior Jennifer Wahba, 6-3, 6-3, in the semifinals. Tatsuno defeated Peninsula teammate Emily Aston, 6-2, 6-2, in the other semifinal. Both finalists may have benefited from the absence of Peninsula’s top player, Erica Schweyer, from the tournament. Schweyer, who won the league and Southern Section doubles title last season with now-graduated Macall Harkins, planned to play singles during the postseason this year but was sidelined by a recurring right-knee injury.

Two Peninsula teams advanced to the league’s doubles championship match, which will be played Monday at Peninsula.

Aston and Stephanie Chen, who are 28-1 in sets together this season, advanced with a 6-2, 6-3 victory over Mira Costa’s Allie Wahba and Kratai Srikier, and the Panthers’ Paige Weber and Tiffany Liu defeated the Mira Costa team of Stephanie Giumera and Goldie Gurling, 6-3, 6-2, in another semifinal match.

Blalock improved to 35-0 in sets for the Aztecs. Katie Matthew and Betty Bastardi swept, 6-1, 7-5, 6-3, at No. 2 doubles and Manja Jerkic and Kayla Whitemyer swept, 6-1, 6-4, 6-4, at No. 3 doubles for Palm Desert. The Desert Valley League tournament begins Friday and finishes Monday.

The Cypress team of Emily Garcia and Julia McDaniel defeated Linda Mun and Kimberly Nozawa of La Palma Kennedy, 6-2, 6-2, for the doubles championship.

Malibu’s Casey Zweig and Lisa Marie Kohrs defeated Mary Ann Griffith and Katie Anderson of Oaks Christian to win the league doubles championship.

MARMONTE LEAGUE

Calabasas 16, Agoura 2
The three singles players of Calabasas--Amanda Fink, Jilli Schnitman and Brittney Harper--lost only one game among them in a complete sweep of the nine singles matches at Agoura. Calabasas, the No. 5-ranked team in Division I, finished the regular season 16-0 overall and 14-0 in league. Agoura wound up 8-10 overall and 5-9 in league play. The Marmonte League individual finals begin Monday at Agoura High and conclude Tuesday with semifinal and final round play.

Thousand Oaks 12, Newbury Park 6
No. 2 singles player Danielle Erb swept by 6-0 scores, and No. 1 player Lauren Ritz dropped just two games in winning, 6-2, 6-0, 6-0, as Thousand Oaks (13-5, 10-4) beat the Panthers (5-13, 4-10) at Newbury Park.

Westlake 11, Moorpark 7
Kate Edwards and Marissa Cowan swept at No. 1 doubles, 6-0, 6-2, 6-4, and Katie McGrath and Tiffany Russell also swept at No. 3 doubles, 6-2, 6-4, 6-1, to lead Westlake (12-6, 10-4) at Moorpark (10-4 in league). Westlake, Moorpark and Thousand Oaks all tied for second place in the league and a coin flip will decide the finishing order on Friday. The top four teams will still advance to the playoffs.

El Segundo junior Asagi Onaga won the Ocean League singles championship after Beverly Hills’ Tova Hausman, a league doubles winner last season, was forced to retire because of severe back spasms with Onaga leading, 6-2, 0-6, 2-0, in the league tournament final at MountainGate Country Club.

Hausman’s partner when she won the 2003 doubles title, senior Tessa Tran, repeated as doubles champion with senior teammate Anna Litovsky. Tran and Litovsky beat Alex Khoury and Savanna Yeh of Santa Monica, 8-4, in an eight-game, pro-set format.

Fatima Sanchez dropped five games in winning three sets, 6-0, 6-1, 6-4, for league-champion Oxnard (11-4, 9-1) in a regular season-ending victory at Hueneme.

Brooke Bartlett of Fountain Valley easily advanced to the Sunset League individual finals with a 6-0, 6-0, victory over Jen Heuman of Huntington Beach at Los Caballeros Sports Village Center in Fountain Valley. Bartlett will face Lauren Pascoe of Huntington Beach in tomorrow’s final at 2:30 p.m.. Pascoe defeated Brittany Bass of Edison, 6-1, 6-1.

In doubles, Fountain Valley’s Amy Nguyen and Margaret Pietrowski took care of Edison’s sister duo of Melissa and Lauren Boyer, 6-1, 6-2, in a semifinal match.
