Baseball: South Hills wins Division 2 championship

Huskies defeated REV, 4-3

There’s never a boring moment for South Hills, the team loaded with talent but a team that doesn’t make it easy to win games sometimes.

The Huskies were cruising along on Saturday in the Southern Section Division 2 championship game against REV with a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the sixth inning behind sophomore Brandon Dieter, a Stanford commit. But after a leadoff triple by Paul Rojas, Dieter was replaced by Ryan Mauch, and things got interesting.

REV scored three runs to take a 3-2 lead. Down to its final three outs, South Hills rallied for a 4-3 victory to win its sixth section title.

“We do make things difficult, but the sign of a good team is when you’re down and come back,” Dieter said.

Quinn Cotter started South Hills’ comeback with a leadoff single. Then Jacob Dominguez got a single. After a sacrifice, Robert De La Cruz lined an RBI single to tie the game. Then Chris Moya got an RBI sacrifice fly.

In the bottom of the seventh, REV got one-out singles to put the tying and winning runs at first and third. That’s when Mauch induced a game-ending double play.

“The range of emotions from A to Z is incredible,” Coach Darren Murphy said. “I did say to the kids in the seventh just think how good it’s going to be when we come back.”

Rojas finished with two hits for REV. Aaron Fong had two hits for South Hills.
