Football: Bishop Amat, Corona Centennial get to show off their four quarterbacks

Perhaps never before in a Pac-5 Division semifinal game have two teams had four top quarterbacks available to step in and make big plays at a moment’s notice. That’s the most intriguing part of Friday’s matchup between Bishop Amat and host Corona Centennial.

So far, the coaches and quarterbacks have made taking turns work out in an era where good quarterbacks not starting don’t stick around very long.

Centennial has deployed a two-quarterback rotation all season, with junior Anthony Catalano and senior Nate Ketteringham alternating every series. The two have combined for more than 3,000 yards passing.

Bishop Amat started the season with two promising juniors in Damian Garcia and Ryder Ruiz. Garcia won the starting job, passing for 2,002 yards and 21 touchdowns. But after Garcia suffered a rib injury, Ruiz has come in and led the Lancers to four consecutive victories. They have combined for more than 3,000 yards passing, and both are available to play on Friday.

All four quarterbacks have benefited from having terrific receivers. For Centennial, junior Javon McKinley has been making big plays all season. For Bishop Amat, junior Tyler Vaughns has been raising his profile on a weekly basis, stamping himself as a must-get college recruit for 2016.

It all means that no matter the situation next week _ and expect lots of points _ Centennial and Bishop Amat will have lots of options and opportunities. No one knows who the standout will be, because with four quarterbacks available, it’s going to be a game unlike any other for the chance to make it to Angel Stadium on Dec. 6.
