Football: Fans are excited for San Fernando-Sylmar showdown

The Valley Mission League begins on Friday with the premier game as far as fans are concerned: Sylmar at San Fernando.

“It’s always meaningful,” said Sylmar Coach John Brazil, who’s a former San Fernando player and knows all about the rivalry.

Imagine what Brazil feels like standing on the other side of the field from his alma mater.

“It’s a hard thing,” he said.

He was 1-1 against his former school as Sylmar’s offensive coordinator. Now he’s the Spartans’ head coach, and the Spartans (2-2) are favored against the Tigers (1-2).

“It should be a sellout on both sides,” he said. “It should be wild and crazy.”

Sylmar has been trying to get its young offensive and defensive lines some experience. The Spartans return quarterback Clarence Williams.

San Fernando, the two-time defending City Division II champions, has been led by sophomore running back Alex Gonzalez, who has rushed for more than 400 yards.
