Football: QB Miles Bryant gets to learn from ex-QB Jim Bonds

St. Francis Coach Jim Bonds knows something about developing quarterbacks.

He was a standout quarterback at Newhall Hart who went on to UCLA during his playing days. He was the coach of Casey Clausen at Alemany. And, in his years at St. Francis, he has developed a steady group of passers, such as Jeremiah Martin and Ty Gangi in recent years.

Now he gets to turn his attention to junior Miles Bryant, who will guide the Golden Knights’ offense in their season opener on Friday against West Covina.

“Miles is going to be good,” Bonds said. “It’s nice to have a guy for two years. I’m excited. He’s intelligent with a strong arm.”

St. Francis played Valencia in a scrimmage last week and learned some things.

“They showed us some areas we need to improve on,” Bonds said.

St. Francis must replace some key graduates, but there’s new players ready to make an impact, including junior Daniel Scott, a 6-foot-2 free safety-receiver moving up from the JV team.

But St. Francis is usually successful when it has a good quarterback, and Bonds is convinced Bryant will be that player.
