Football: St. Francis’ giant freshman, Kyle Stanback, is still growing

Share

Forgive St. Francis Coach Jim Bonds if he thinks every day freshman Kyle Stanback looks a little different.

At 6 feet 6 and 240 pounds, Stanback is a growing boy. He played tight end and defensive tackle last season as a 14-year-old. This spring, Bonds expects Stanback to increase his roles.

“He’s growing into that body,” Bonds said.

Stanback is the younger brother of Maranatha 6-10 center Trevor Stanback.

It’s going to be an interesting spring for the Golden Knights. Bonds’ nephew, Michael Bonds, a transfer from Newport Harbor, is taking over at quarterback.

So has the head coach yelled at his nephew yet?

“He’s probably in for a rude awakening the first time I light him up,” the head coach said. “I won’t hold back.”

The question will be what does Michael Bonds’ father, Tom, have to say. He played quarterback for Hart and Cal Lutheran and is the head coach’s older brother.

Stay tuned.
