An antique Ford crashed into a tree in the San Gabriel Valley on Monday night, killing two people, authorities said.

Shortly before 7 p.m., the Ford -- believed to be a Model A or Model T -- was driving near the intersection of Broadway and Temple City Boulevard in Temple City when it struck a tree and caught fire, said Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Sgt. Julie Geary.

The two people riding in the vehicle were pronounced dead at the scene. Their identities were not released.

It’s unclear what caused the early-model car to hit the tree. It’s unclear if the passengers died from the impact or from the subsequent blaze.

The intersection was expected to be closed for at least three hours as officials investigated the crash.
