An 85-year-old hiker missing since Saturday morning in the Angeles National Forest was rescued Sunday by L.A. County Sheriff’s Search and Rescue teams, authorities said.

Hiker Donald Buchanan was found after a search and rescue ground team heard faint whistling across a ravine about 10:30 a.m as crew members searched along a trail near the Mt. Baden-Powell peak, sheriff’s officials said in a statement.

The team was able to hike closer to the sound and soon were able to speak with Buchanan, who called out to the rescue crew to say he was uninjured.

A sheriff’s rescue helicopter searched the cliff ridge and found Buchanan at the top of the cliff face.

Rescuers then lowered a paramedic down to perform a quick medical evaluation of Buchanan, including checking him for hypothermia from exposure to the overnight elements.

Buchanan was flown to the hospital for further evaluation and treatment.

The overnight temperature was below 45 degrees, sheriff’s officials said.
