An autopsy is pending to determine how a man died Sunday after jumping through a second-story window while trying to escape Azusa police, a coroner’s official said.

The man -- identified Monday as Alec Deon Torres, 19, from San Dimas -- was leaping from rooftop to rooftop in Azusa trying to avoid arrest on a drug-related warrant when he jumped through the window, injured himself and died, according to the L.A. County Sheriff’s Department.

The chase started when Azusa police tried to arrest Torres about 3 p.m. in the 800 block of East Pepper Tree Drive, the Sheriff’s Department said. But instead of surrendering, Torres ran into a family member’s apartment.

Azusa police had the residence surrounded, but Torres got away when he emerged from a second-floor window and started jumping across adjacent rooftops, officials said.

Sheriff’s deputies say Torres then jumped through a second-story window of an apartment building that they then surrounded.

Azusa police, thinking there were guns inside the apartment, tried communicating with Torres several times before moving in, officials said.

Subsequently, a SWAT team found him dead inside the apartment, apparently from injuries he suffered going through the window, authorities said.

An autopsy to determine Torres’ exact cause of death was scheduled for either Monday afternoon or Tuesday.
