The body of a woman found lying face down under the Newport
Nancy Hammour's body was discovered early Monday when a passerby spotted it under the south side of the bridge, which spans the bay between Bayside and Dover drives.
Police withheld most details about the woman, including her hometown. But KCBS-TV reported that the woman had most recently lived in Santa Ana and quoted a family friend who said Hammour had recently become a mother.
The death is being investigated as suspicious, which is typically the initial classification when bodies are found, Manzella said.
An autopsy is pending, an Orange County Sheriff's Department spokesman said.
Sheriff's department divers aided police in collecting evidence under the bridge.
No further information about the investigation, including the suspected cause of her death, was available.
Terese Pearson, owner of nearby fish market Pearson's Port, said Monday that a couple walking their dog found the body.
She said that when she arrived at her business about 8:15 a.m. she didn't notice anything suspicious but later spotted the police cars.
"I poked my head out to see if they had guns drawn," Pearson said. "I didn't know what was going on."
Anyone with information about the incident is asked to call Newport police Det. Ryan Peters at (949) 644-3779.
