A diver was declared dead Wednesday night after being pulled “unresponsive” from the channel leading to San Diego’s Mission Bay by lifeguards, officials said.

After receiving a distress call at 7 p.m., the lifeguards located the diver beneath the water, loosened his weight belt and pulled him aboard a lifeguard craft. The diver’s friends said he had been beneath the water for four to six minutes, according to the San Diego Fire-Rescue Department.

The diver, whose name was not released, did not respond to CPR and was taken to UC San Diego Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.
