66-year-old man charged in Koreatown beating death

A 66-year-old man was charged with murder Monday in the beating death of a man in Koreatown earlier this year, Los Angeles County prosecutors announced.

Roy Lee Adams pleaded not guilty to murder with an enhancement of using a blunt object in the March slaying of Cornelius Rich, 62, who also used the name Andre Dupree. Adams has previous convictions for drugs, trying to escape from prison and carrying an unregistered, loaded gun, officials said.

Authorities say that Adams beat Rich more than a week before his body was found in Rich’s apartment in the 500 block of Kingsley Drive. Rich’s body was discovered by the landlord after neighbors complained about the smell emanating from his apartment.

If convicted, Adams faces up to 25 years to life in prison. He’s being held in lieu of $1-million bail and is scheduled to be in court Jan. 10.
