Suspect arrested in fatal shooting of 54-year-old woman in Long Beach

Long Beach police on Thursday identified a woman killed in a shooting and announced the arrest of the suspected assailant.

Authorities identified 54-year-old Monica Barboza as the vicitm of the shooting, which occurred after 10 p.m. Tuesday in the 3500 block of Monica Avenue, according to Long Beach police.

Police officers responding to the location discovered Barboza inside a converted garage where she had been living. Barboza, who suffered a gunshot wound to her upper body, was pronounced dead at the scene by Long Beach fire paramedics, according to police.

As homicide detectives began their investigation, they were notified about another gunshot victim who had been driven by a friend to a nearby hospital. Investigators determined that the 52-year-old man was visiting Barboza when the shooting occurred, according to police.

The identity of the man, who is related to Barboza, was not immediately released. Authorities said his injuries were not life-threatening and was listed in stable condition.

On Wednesday, homicide detectives arrested 53-year-old Robert Rubio Jr. of Hawaiian Gardens in connection with the shootings.

He was booked on suspicion of murder and attempted murder. His bail has been set at $1 million.

Authorities said Rubio had been involved in a dispute with other residents at the home where Barboza lived.

Rubio, a documented gang member, was taken into custody without incident at the home of a friend in Hawaiian Gardens, according to Long Beach police.
